Daniel Nielsen creates stunning photographs, writes with authority on a wide variety of subjects, prefers to live in small resort towns and loves the outdoors. He's a happily married father of two. He enjoys backpacking, surfing, scuba diving, motorcycles, bicycles, convertibles, mystery novels, skiing and swimming.
He's fascinated by place names and has spent time at places named Avalon, Paradise Valley, Walhalla, Purgatory, Hell Roaring Canyon, Devil's Tower, Paradox, Santa Claus, Christmas, Bat Cave, Pickle Village and Rodeo. He has explored nine caves in seven states. He has sailed in the Atlantic Ocean, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Powell and inland lakes in both Florida and Michigan. He is a founding member of the Northern Nevada Dive Rescue Team, and has participated in underwater body searches, municipal reservoir repair jobs, boat recovery efforts, and wilderness mountain lake cleanups for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. He has gone scuba diving in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and in dozens of bodies of water in North America, including rivers with fast currents and zero visibility, Florida springs, lakes at high altitude in California and Nevada; and has seen sights underwater including shipwrecks, caves, hot springs, coral reefs, kelp forests, a factory and a silt-encrusted Model T Ford. He has skied at 22 ski areas in 5 states and one Canadian province. He has visited 40 states and slept under the stars in 17 of them.
