The invisible barrier
Some places are so filled with power that you feel as if you might suddenly burst through an invisible barrier and end up in a place of wonder.
Photographer's note: To create this image, I used a film camera with a motor drive and hot shoe flash. The sun had gone down and the dark was gathering very quickly. I walked along the paved path winding through a rough field of volcanic ash and aimed the camera at my son walking ahead of me. I disabled the film advance and, still walking, held down the shutter button. On that single frame of film, the motor drive fired seven or eight times, but the flash couldn't keep up and fired only twice. Hence just two images of the boy but several layers of horizon. I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting, but I like the way it turned out.
